2026 Numismatic Plan: FIFA World Cup and CGD’s 150th Anniversary
Discover the themes, designs, creators and technical details of the commemorative coins that the Portuguese Mint will be minting this year.
This issue programme comprises 14 commemorative coins (12 collector’s coins and 2 circulation coins), which will highlight significant events, figures and elements of Portuguese and world culture.
Among the new releases, the ‘Emblematic Coin of Portugal’, designed by the sculptor Baiba Šime, stands out as the country’s first flagship coin, offering an alternative investment and savings option to bars or ingots. It will serve as an ambassador for national iconography in the international numismatic market and, from this year onwards, will be issued annually, reflecting the historical evolution of the Portuguese coat of arms.
Also of note is the coin evoking the ‘Berlinde’, designed by Henrique Cayatte and part of the ‘Childhood Games’ series, an innovative coin incorporating 3D technology, highlighting the relief of the spheres and the texture of the obverse.
Among the commemorative issues, collector’s coins will be minted to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Constitution, also designed by Baiba Šime; the 50th anniversary of 25 November, designed by Carolina Ladeira; and the 150th anniversary of Caixa Geral de Depósitos, designed by Hugo Maciel.
History and heritage will also be highlighted on the coins commemorating the Águas Livres Aqueduct (14th Ibero-American Series), designed by engraver Nuno Caetano, the Ponta do Albarnaz Lighthouse (Lighthouses of Portugal series), by sculptor José João de Brito, and to King Manuel I’s ‘Portuguese’ coin, a contemporary reinterpretation by designer Jorge Silva of the Portuguese coin with the widest circulation worldwide.
The second coin in the ‘Contemporary Portuguese Visual Artists’ series, designed by Teresa Milheiro, will be dedicated to the painter Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso and, in turn, the ‘Designing the Coin’ series will continue with a coin alluding to ‘Multiculturalism’, created from a design by the young Melissa Garcia, winner of the 5th edition of the competition, promoted among primary schools in the municipality of Faro.
Sport will also feature among the 2026 coins, with a coin designed by Nuno Martins dedicated to the FIFA World Cup, which will take place in Canada, the United States and Mexico between 11 June and 19 July this year.
As for the commemorative circulation coins, with a face value of 2 euros, the Portuguese Mint will present a coin celebrating the 100th anniversary of the global volunteer organisation Rotary International in Portugal, with a national side designed by the sculptor João Duarte, and a coin marking the 70th anniversary of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, designed by Pedro Carvalho.
